- This class is designed to meet the needs of struggling readers. Despite exposure to early literacy instruction, many children continue to struggle with learning to read. Many times, they begin to dislike reading and avoid activities that are dependent on reading. Although developing readers are in different points in their reading journey, there are underlying skills that can be addressed to remediate many reading difficulties and increase success for lifelong reading.
- Many reading difficulties can be traced back to weaknesses in phonological awareness, the need for slower-paced and explicit phonics instruction as well as the need for more opportunities to practice skills once they are introduced.
- This class will be an overview of the foundational skills needed to be successful readers and writers. During the first few sessions, students will be given informal baseline assessments to determine their strengths and needs as developing readers. Based on the data, lessons will be planned to meet the needs of all students.
Each session will consist of the following skills and practice:
- Letters and sounds
- Advanced alphabet skills
- Advanced phonological awareness
- Explicit teaching of a new reading or spelling skill
- Reading practice
- Spelling practice
- Activites to increase comprehension skills
- Intervention time to work on individual reading goals
